Remembering a Life: Creating a Legacy
Written by Ray Chattin, Indiana SWCD Foundation
board member
My father recently passed away. I am grateful for
the many kind expressions of sympathy extended from the conservation
family to me and my family.
Dad was a conservation leader during the late 50’s
and early 60’s chairing the Knox Co. SWCD board for a time. Besides
being a conservation innovator on his own farm, he was instrumental in
the formation of the Mariah Creek Watershed Project and was a founding
member of the Four Rivers RC&D. He was also an Indiana Master Farm
Conservationist.
Most importantly, he was a man of the land who
loved the land.
In planning his funeral arrangements, I thought it
appropriate to honor him by setting up a memorial fund for the Knox Co.
SWCD Endowment. It subsequently raised over $1200 which the Indiana SWCD
Foundation has added to Knox County’s fund.
I can’t think of a more fitting way to honor dad’s
service to the people of our District and our natural resources or a
better opportunity to do something meaningful for the future of the
District. I feel that donations to Knox County’s endowment are gifts
that will keep on giving, even as our fund grows. That’s a legacy that I
deeply appreciate and I know dad would have approved.
If you feel the same way and think there may be an
opportunity to benefit your District while honoring a person’s service,
contact the Indiana SWCD Foundation to learn how easy it is.

How do SWCDs Benefit from Indiana SWCD Foundation Endowments?
An
SWCD endowment of $10,000 can yield an annual grant of $500.00.
SWCDs interested in drawing these funds must first reach the $10,000 level,
and
then work with the Indiana SWCD Foundation to set a spending rate (in this
example, five percent).
SWCDs participating in the Woody Warehouse tree sale program grow their
endowment each time they sell a Woody Warehouse tree. For each tree, Woody
Warehouse donates $1.00 to the Indiana SWCD Foundation for the particular
SWCD’s endowment.
As the endowment grows, so does the potential for the SWCD to receive an
annual grant. Donations to build the endowment must come from private
sources, such as businesses or individuals.
We envision, over
time, SWCDs reaching endowment values of $50,000 and more. This
amount could potentially yield an annual return of $2,500 to a SWCD.
As the individual endowment grows, so does the potential annual return.
As endowments collectively increase, all endowment holders benefit from the
larger principal's increased earning potential. |
